Driving slow in left lane (fast lane) |
Seems that it is actually legal in Texas... which I really don't think it should... encourages people to drive slow in those lanes causing other people to zigzag across the lanes to get past slow driving cars.
Left lane is for all speeds "I'm pretty sure I remember reading a few years ago that the Legislature had finally changed the traffic law from 'Slower drivers keep right' to 'Must drive in the right hand lane unless passing or turning left,' " writes Tom Carlson. He wonders whether it is legal to cruise along in the left lane if a sign does not forbid it.
Yes, it is.
The signs are posted in places where highway engineers think they are needed for safety.
The law Carlson remembers was passed for the sake of consistency, said Stuart Corder, Texas Department of Transportation operations director in Houston.
"The signs are used sparingly," he said, "because most freeways do not have enough excess capacity to reserve an entire lane for passing only. On a great majority of our highways, traveling in the left lane for normal use is legal."
